Our wine

We produce three different wines at Pian della Chiesa:

Margot 2021
Organic red wine, Indicazione Geografica Tipica - Liguria di Levante. Composed of a blend of 60% Syrah, 20% Merlot and 20% Massaretta (an indigenous grape variety). Cultivated with the Guyot system. Alcohol 12.5%. The first vintage was in 2014. Vinification: the first period of contact with the skins begins at low temperatures (15 degrees) to favor the extraction of the aromatic components of the grapes. The wine remains on its skins for approximately 14 days until the end of alcoholic fermentation. Then the temperature of the skins is raised, around 20 degrees, to extract tannins and color and encourage malolactic fermentation. These two fermentations take place in stainless steel vats at a controlled temperature. Without added sulphites. The Margot then remains for 6 months in stainless steel containers followed by a final period of refinement in the bottle for 6 months. No sulphites are added. Only 2079 hand-numbered bottles. €12 in the cellar.

Margot Terrazze 2021
Organic red wine, Indicazione Geografica Tipica - Liguria di Levante. Composed of a blend of Merlot, Cabernet and Syrah. Cultivated with the Guyot system. Alcohol 12.5%. The first vintage was in 2017.

Only 1000 hand-numbered bottles. €17 in the cellar.

Margottino 2023
Organic rosé wine, Indicazione Geografica Tipica - Liguria di Levante. Composed of a blend of Syrah, Massaretta (an indigenous grape variety), Cabernet Franc and Merlot. Cultivated with the Guyot system. Alcohol 12.0%. The first vintage was in 2020. Vinification: on the same evening as the harvest, approximately 10% of the must is transferred to another steel vat. The liquid therefore had little time to take on the red color of the skins. The Margottino remains for 3 months in stainless steel containers and is ready to be bottled, usually at the end of March, with the Margot Terrazze from the previous year. Only 929 hand-numbered bottles. €12 in the cellar.

RATINGS AND TEST NOTES

  • Luca Maroni 'The Best Italian Wines': Margot 2018: 91/99 points, Margot 2019/20: 90/99 points. Margot Terrazze 2017: 95/99, Margot Terrazze 2018: 94/99
  • The sommelier of Tannico Simone Virgara comment on Margot 2016: 'Ruby red full of color, with important violet reflections to the eye. Deep fruity nose, full of plums, blackberries and cherries, followed by clear spicy hints of black pepper. On the palate it follows the same path as the nose, proving to be well-worked in tannins, good persistence and pleasant aftertaste.' Margot 2017: 'Intense ruby tending towards purple, on the nose the spicy texture is dense with notes of earth and leather. The fruit is intense, with a good ripe body. Oxygenation gives hints of flowers and chamomile. The spices that emerge tend towards coffee powder. The taste is tannic, enveloping, with good structure, good persistence. Heat. As the wine ages over time, it refines to its current elegance while maintaining its full expression.'
